2024 Initiatives

  • Equity & Inclusion in the Practice of Law

AMISTAD will continue to dissect workplace challenges to diversity & inclusion in order to develop productive strategies to widen career pathways and help tp ensure that opportunities remain visible and available. Pointed programming includes planned internship programs, discussions with employers and attorneys to address concerns, and assistance with employment opportunities. Through this initiative AMISTAD looks to increase inclusion across law such that government, the court system, firms and other employers can, inter alia, reflect the populations that they serve.

  • Career Opportunities for our Member Attorneys

AMISTAD is dedicated to connecting our members with suitable employment opportunities. We are creating relationships with employers to facilitate networking and interview opportunities.

  • Mentorship of Young Attorneys & Law Students

Applications will soon be available for our mentorship program. We will match experienced members with younger members, members looking to change practice areas, and students. We ask that each match meet in person at least quarterly and that it include one shadowing event. We will have a program kickoff and a celebration in 2025 when the one year formal commitment concludes.

  • Scholarship Programs

AMISTAD shall participate in the promotion of competition and scholarship opportunities for High School and Law Students.

High School: The National Bar Association's Annual Drum Major for Justice Oratory Competition is open to high school juniors and seniors. AMISTAD serves as the local affiliate for local students to participate.

Law Students: AMISTAD shall participate in the National Bar's partnership with the NBI for the Bar Passage Scholarship - which is a $5,000 award to help with the study period.

AMISTAD plans to award at least one independant award to a Law Student with a connection to Long Island who plan to practice in this area.

  • Community Outreach

We will be expanding our reach into the communities of Long Island to have our attorneys be resources for community & civic organizations. We also plan to bring back In Person Constitution Day in Nassau and Suffolk County Schools. Our Pro Bono Clinics will be held throughout the year.

  • Networking Opportunities

AMISTAD moves to cultivate the rich network that our professional community is developing. By connecting with other professionals, we can enhance our client & referral base. To this end, not only will AMISTAD connect our members with each other, but also with the greater community.

  • CLE Classes Through AMISTAD

This Fall AMISTAD will hold a 1-Day Symposium of CLEs, Speakers, Vendors and Networking.

  • Professional Development

This year we are working to Raise the Bar.

We will hold workshops & CLEs on

Interview & Public Speaking Skills, Litigation & Courtroom Tactics, as well as soft skills such as Executive Presence and commanding the room.

  • Social Justice on Long Island

AMISTAD was founded on the principals that there is strength in numbers. Advocating for our members within the Court and legal system as well for the communities where we live and serve will remain a priority for AMISTAD.
