Annual Gala Awards

Founder’s Award

 This award is given to an Amistad member that has lead with vision and conviction to push the organization forward in its goals of promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in the practice of law on Long Island.


The inaugural Founder’s Award was granted in 2021 to two of Amistad’s founders,

Hon. Victoria Gumbs-Moore and J. Stewart Moore, Esq.

2022 - Patricia A. Waite, Esq.


2023 - Leslie Anderson, Esq. (posthumously)


Diversity Award

 Granted to an individual that has worked with Amistad to expand our programming and the opportunities available for our membership of minority judges, attorneys, and law students.

2023 - Hon. Jerald S. Carter (ret.)

Trailblazer Award

Granted to an individual who has demonstrated a pivotal and impactful position that aligns with the mission of of Amistad.

2022 - Hon. Geoffrey Prime


2023 - Chief Judge of the State of New York: Hon. Rowan Wilson


Black History Month Awards

Hon. Marquette L. Floyd Achievement Award

Named after the first black Suffolk District Court judge and the county's first black state Supreme Court Justice. Granted in conjunction with the Suffolk County District Administrative Judge and SCBA during Black History Month.

The Amistad Presidential Award

Awarded to a community member that not only represents the mission of Amistad but also has positively contributed to the Nassau County Community in accordance with the annual Black History Month Theme.

 25th Anniversary Reception at Oheka Castle

 Each year Amistad recognizes esteemed members of our organization, members of the legal and judicial communities and influential members of the public community through various awards.

In 2021, Amistad Long Island Black Bar Assn celebrated its 25th anniversary year.


In recognition of this milestone, a reception was held at Oheka Castle in Huntington, NY on

 July 29, 2021.


The event was an astounding success with over 200 attendees.

Hon. Valerie Cartright served as the Mistress of Ceremony and remarks were given by T. Andrew Brown, 2021 NYSBA President and Joseph Drayton, 76th President of the National Bar Association.


The keynote address was delivered by NYS Attorney General, Leticia James.

At this event, the inaugural Founders Award was given to Hon. Victoria Gumbs-Moore and J. Stewart Moore, Esq.


This event was also a successful fundraiser, helping to provide the means for AMISTAD to continue to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the Long Island legal community and beyond.
